Accident Insurance: Protection in Case of Accidents

Who is insured through health insurance and who through the employer? We clarify the most important differences for your optimal protection.

Accident Coverage in Health Insurance

Anyone working more than 8 hours per week for an employer is automatically insured against occupational and non-occupational accidents under the UVG. But what about children, students, homemakers, or the self-employed? These individuals must mandatory include accident risk in their basic insurance. Without this inclusion, important benefits for medical treatments after a fall or impact are missing.

  • For children & students: Mandatory inclusion in basic insurance.
  • For the unemployed: Coverage via SUVA (provided there is entitlement to unemployment benefits).
  • Non-working individuals: Homemakers must insure themselves via health insurance.
  • Deductible & co-payment: These costs apply to accidents covered via health insurance.
  • Additional protection: Supplement coverage for hospital stays after accidents.

Important Questions About Accident Protection

What happens if I quit my job?

Coverage through your employer ends 31 days after your last working day. Afterward, you must register the accident risk with your health insurer or take out extension insurance (Abredeversicherung).

Does the health insurance accident coverage also pay for loss of earnings?

No. The inclusion in health insurance only covers treatment costs (doctor, hospital, medication). Daily allowances (loss of earnings compensation) are not included.

Why do children always have accident inclusion?

Since children are not employed, they cannot be insured through an employer. Therefore, health insurance inclusion is mandatory for all children in Switzerland.

What is an extension insurance (Abredeversicherung)?

If you take a work break (e.g., world trip), you can extend your employer's UVG protection for up to 6 months. This is often cheaper and offers better benefits than health insurance.
